Location

Moree is a town in Moree Plains Shire in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the banks of the Mehi River, in the centre of the rich black-soil plains. Newell and Gwydir highways intersect at the town. It can also be reached from Sydney by daily train and air services. Wikipedia

Requirement

James Vaclavik from Shay Brennan Constructions contacted us in May 2022. They had won the contract to refurbish the main grandstand at the Moree Racecourse.

The existing grandstand was a concrete structure which had obsolete ‘Comalco’ seating that was in urgent need of replacing.

A phone conversation established the scope, and I emailed James a picture of BAB Aluminum’s project at the Brother Henry Grandstand at St Joseph’ College Hunters Hill in Sydney. James was happy with the concept and had his team conduct a site measure. With the site measure done we discovered the step risers were not uniform, but we proposed making custom height seat supports to solve the problem.

Solution

The project consisted of 186m of seating with backrests. The timeline was important as the old seating had to be removed, and the concrete stand pressure washed and painted with epoxy paint.

As usual, the BAB Aluminium team manufactured all the components ‘just in time’, and the seating was delivered by our crane truck on 6^th July 2022.The seating was installed by Shay Brennan Constructions.

The major refurbishment of the 50-year-old grandstand, costing $1.1m, was unveiled in September 2022 by then Minister for Hospitality and Racing Mr Kevin Anderson, with all patrons extremely happy with the new facelift for the Grandstand.

27^th May 2023 will be the 99^th Annual Moree Picnic Races with 5000+ spectators anticipated.

With the new grandstand and a great committee to organise the event, Moree Picnic Races will continue to be a favourite on the social calendar for the district for many decades beyond their centenary.
